Is Salt Water Good For Your Hair?

Most people think that salt water is healing to the body, but that is not true for your hair.  While it is true that salt water can help detox skin and help wounds heal, it can actually destroy your hair.

Like you skin, your hair can become dehydrated.  For example, when you use heat on your hair, it becomes stringy and brittle.  Because seawater has a high salt content, it causes your hair to become weak.

Have you ever tried to brush your hair right after leaving the water?  When you’re in the water, your hair looks as flowing and soft as a mermaid’s.  But when you leave and dry it off with a towel, it becomes brittle and not so elastic anymore.

To save your hair from daily salt water exposure, there are a couple of things to do.  The simplest would be to try a leave in conditioner.  Put it in your hair the night after you go to the beach.  Whenever I do a leave-in conditioner, I always add some extra natural oils like coconut or almond oil to help moisturize my hair.

If you want to give your hair a little extra protection from salt water damage, you could do a couple of hair masks.  My favorite is the avocado and olive oil mask.  Mash up an avocado and mix in oil and leave it in for about 10 minutes.

Another one that I heard works great is honey and lukewarm buttermilk.  This one is pretty simple. Mix together the honey and buttermilk and leave it in for seven minutes.  The honey works to keep the shine in your hair and the buttermilk helps it retain moisture.

Why Tea Is Better Than Coffee

I’ve never grown up in a coffee-drinking house.  The closest thing right now in my house to a cup of coffee is some mocha hot chocolate.  A little over a month ago, I found this great brand of tea called Blend Bee Tea.  What I like most about this tea is that you use a tea infuser rather than a pre-packaged tea bag.  In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to get the most natural tasting tea.

Tea Is a LOT Easier to Make Than Coffee

When has anyone ever said that they got a bad cup of coffee? Evan Rachel Green can make a great cup of Blend Bee Happy Times tea.

Green Tea Is Healthy for Your Body

Did you know green tea can help you lose weight and is also good for your bones?

Tea Is Calming

Coffee gives you the jitters and makes you go to the bathroom every five minutes, whereas an noncaffeinated cup of tea relaxes you.

It Helps You Get Better

Tea is something that you should have by your bedside when you are feeling a little under the weather.  Add some honey and lemon to enhance your tea and help stop your cold symptoms.

Bras to Wear With Every Outfit

Low back and backless dresses are an essential part of your summer wardrobe, but they fall in the back of your closet because you want to wear it, but you don’t want to worry about your bra showing and taking away from the outfit or giving you a horrible tan line.  I love backless dresses, but I don’t like when even a little of my bra shows. Here are a few tips to wear that summer backless dress with no worries.

Open Back

Backs are one of the most underrated parts of the body, and honestly one of the best places to show off your shape.   The problem with open back dresses is any bra you seem to find doesn’t seem to give support and not be seen.

When you are wearing your boho backless shirt or dress make your bra part of your outfit.  Yes, I said show off your bra, but just the back of it.  American Eagle sells the best bandeaus.  Bandeaus are bras that are comparable to a the same style as a strapless swimsuit but without uncomfortable underwire.

High Neck

High Necks are all in this season, from beach wear to dresses.  But I have found it is one of the hardest designs to find a good bra for.

A strapless bra is the easiest solution to wear with high necks.  Try to find a bra with the that is kinda like a short corset.   This will create more of a shape and give you more support.  The problem with strapless bras is that you are constantly worried about whether or not it is falling down.  The longer line helps everything stay in place.

Open Sides

Cutout dresses are becoming a very popular option for a sundress.  The only problem is that sometimes your bra shows, and there is no way to avoid it.
My advice go with a skin color lace bra.  The reason being is there is no easy way for someone not to see your bra, but in choosing a simple lace pattern without any glitter or gems, from far away, it won’t look like you’re wearing a bra or you're wearing a tape bra.

Plunging Neck Line

You might not know this, but you get the most support from the band of your bra and not the front.

For a plunging neckline go with a bra made especially for a low neckline or a triangle bar.  The plunging neckline might be low enough so it won’t show.  Sometimes the dress’s neck is too low for any bra.  Wearing a triangle bra just adds little lines going across your body.  You can either match the color with the dress or choose a skin color bra.

How to do Your Eyebrows the Right Way

I’ve been wanting to write this article for a little over a year now because eyebrows have become a very big part of people’s beauty routines. When I was a little kid, I was, unfortunately, attacked by a dog, and I was bitten on one of my eyebrows.  Not that it was a giant deal - I still have two eyebrows - but it is pretty much impossible to make them look the same.  After years of practice and going to school with horribly plucked eyebrows, however, I finally figured out how to make them look great.

Throughout high school, college, and reading every fashion magazine out there, I’ve seen just about every eyebrow shape there is and what looks the best. The one thing I have to say before starting on how to shape your eyebrows is to never shave and draw on eyebrows.  Eyebrow pencil is wonderful things because they fill little spaces that your eyebrow hairs do not cover up, but you should not use eyebrow pencils with the same thickness as those of cartoon characters.

Things You Need To Do Your Eyebrows:

  • Mini Scissors
  • Eyebrow Brush
  • Tweezers
How I do my eyebrows is very simple and follows a simple exercise.  When doing your brows, stick
to your natural line.

This simple diagram is the only thing you need to have to know where to start plucking.  The first thing I do before even picking up my tweezers or scissors is use my eyebrow brush.  This helps all the hairs get in their natural place.  Then, I use the brush and brush every hair up.  When you use the scissors to cut the hair only cut the hair between sections A and B because there is less hair between B and C.

Some people say to only pick hairs between your eye and eyebrow, but plucking above your eyebrow gives you a more structured look and shapes your eyebrow better.  The first hairs you will start to pluck are the “unibrow” hairs.  Take your eyebrow brush and create the A mark.  You can pluck any hairs that are to the left of your eye.

Your arch is taking your eyebrow brush and making a line from your nose that goes through your eye. This creates the B Section. The C section is a little different for everyone.  It is supposed to go from your nose through the end of your eye, but my eyebrows are not that long.

Once you have sectioned your eyebrow, the next part is the easy part. Well, kind of.  When plucking your eyebrows, it is always best to under-pluck than over pluck.  But even if you do over pluck them, it will always grow back.  When plucking, just follow the natural line.

When you are done plucking, you can either be all set or choose to use an eyebrow pencil.  First, make sure you’re using a pencil that is the same color as your hair.  For this, always start off the light and then blend in.

The Story of the Homeless Man Living In my Dorm Room

Move-in Day
When I left for college, I wasn't worried about not finding my classes or being away from home. The part I was nervous about was sharing a room with a stranger.  Every college student goes through the process of finding their roommate’s name then Facebook stalking them.  Then, they message them and figure out who has the fridge or TV.  But you learn more from meeting people and getting to know them in person.  Someone is not going to tell you over Facebook they are thinking about bringing their samurai sword to college.  (Yeah, true story.)

When I moved on to campus, there was a shortage in housing, and I was housed in the IFA suite at the University of Vermont, which is the integrated fine arts program.  A suite is two double rooms and two singles consisting of three boys and three girls.  I moved into my room in the morning, and I did not meet my roommate, Kate, until later that evening.  Kate was about my height and weight and wore dark black makeup.  I said two words to Kate, then I met her boyfriend, who said, "Hi, I'm Roy. You're going to be seeing a lot of me."

I'm 18, five hours away from home, and a 6-foot-tall older man just said I'll be seeing a lot of him.  Sweet.  We had a short meeting with my RA introducing everyone and doing mini awkward ice breakers.  I look around the room, and my roommate is nowhere to be found.  Later, I go back to my room and I start talking to my roommate.  It turns out that Roy is 25, and she is only 17.  In Massachusetts, that would be statutory rape, but in Vermont, completely legal.

At UVM and probably many campuses, there is the first weekend where it is a just freshman, and they have a couple  activities for them.  When we were waiting in line after only knowing each other for an hour or two, Kate says, "Don't worry, we won't fuck in front of you or anything."  During the first week of college, this topic came up a lot, and people said it becomes normal to have sex when your roommate is still in the room. No way in hell is that ever ok!

The First Month
For the first couple of weeks, everything was ok.  There were just the little things that every roommate relationship goes through.  For example, I have extreme insomnia, and I get most of my sleep in the morning after 3 am.  She would set her alarm to play Jack Johnson at 5 am and hit snooze for a couple hours.  Let's just say I can never listen to “Banana Pancakes” again.  Her boyfriend was living with his ex-girlfriend who was a drug addict.  I would see them around campus, but on weekends, they would sleep at his place that he shared with his ex-girlfriend.

As it turns out, he was not paying rent on his apartment, and at the end of September, he had no place to live.  Every student is required to make a roommate agreement, and according to our agreement, we could have four nights a month that someone gets "Sexiled" from their room and with a good amount of notice.  Kate broke that agreement in one week.  It eventually came to the point where he was sleeping there every night. One night, one of the guys banged on the door because he was passed out drunk on a Tuesday at 10 pm to wake them up.  When I got out of the shower and went into my room to change, Roy would still not get out of my roommate’s bed so I could change.  At this point, it became uncomfortable for me to be in my own room.  I felt like I was intruding on their life.  My room that I was paying thousands of dollars became theirs.

Parents Weekend
Then came parents’ weekend.  A little background on my family: I'm the youngest of two boys, so my parents are a kind of protective of me.  When they got there, I packed a bag and left my room.  According to my dad, I made a mistake by telling Kate and Roy that my parents were coming and I would probably stay with them because they took over my room.  When I came back that weekend to my room, it smelled like cigarettes and whiskey.

When my parents met the man that I had been telling them had been living in my room, they could not believe that my RA had done nothing to help me resolve this problem.  He was 25 years old, not a UVM student, and had creepy blue hair.  That weekend, he got drunk and ran around campus naked.  A few weeks earlier, I had walked up to my RA's room and told her about the random, creepy guys my roommate was bringing to my room, and all she did was walk downstairs and ask the people in my suite about the “homeless man” my roommate brought home that month.

The worst thing about the situation was that I had no one to support me when I was at school. I was living with four other people who saw no problem with him being there so much. The reason being was it didn't affect them the same way it affected me.  They were never half naked and he wouldn't get his 25-year-old passed out self out of his freshman girlfriend’s bed.  Also, he's over 21, so put two and two together.

When my parents got to Burlington on Friday, the first thing they did was call the director of my building who is supposed to help the residents in this situation. No answer all weekend.  I also contacted my RA, but she was away all weekend, too, and couldn't do anything to help the situation.  While I was walking back to my class at 11:30 in the morning, I had no idea what to do.  A 25-year-old man with no house or job was living in my tiny dorm room.  I contacted the head of housing, and an hour later, I had a new room, and I moved out the next day.

I moved out of my room in the middle of October, and the month later, the situation was still the same.  When I moved out, Kate’s boyfriend stayed in the dorm every night, and a little over a month later, she got a new roommate.  After winter break, he got a job and started sleeping on a porch.  Today was the last day of classes, and he got fired from his job and is currently sitting on the floor in my old common room playing Pokemon.

Selfie Sticks Banned At Disney

Today I was doing my normal celebrity gossip stalking and found an interesting article that says that Disney is now enforcing a rule that they will not allow selfie sticks.  Now, many of you are probably wondering how a stick that’s only a couple of feet long could be causing this much of an issue.

What is a Selfie Stick?

A Selfie Stick is a metal rod with a phone holder that extends to make it easier for you to take a selfie alone or with a group of people.  These little sticks are now becoming a controversial topic on the “happiest place on earth.’  Like I said in an earlier article of mine, Disney is not the first place to ban them.  Coachella banned “Narsisstics,” aka Selfie sticks.

Disney is putting up signs all over their parks because people are using Selfie Sticks on rides like Magic Mountain. Whenever these sticks are used, they extend over the safety guard.

Trend Alert: Blue and White Outfits

White and blue is a combination that has always seemed a little underrated until this summer.  A couple of weekends ago, I was in Martha's Vineyard, and there were at least a couple of outfits in each store that were white and blue, which is what inspired this article.  4527386_nill-in41.jpg

I live on Cape Cod, which is a very beachy environment, but even if you don’t live near the shore, it doesn’t mean that this trend isn’t something you can rock.

When I was a freshman in highschool, I went to New York City, and being the fashion obsessed person I was, I visited all the high end stores and was given a lot of strange looks about what I was wearing.  Apparently, what was fashionable for a 14-year-old on the Cape was probably not as fashionable to wear in NYC.  For people in the city, wear white and blue in a more formal fashion.  A white maxi dress looks breathtaking with this white and blue blouse.  It would be a perfect outfit to wear out to dinner or to an event.

I feel like everyone is always looking for an excuse this summer to wear white pants.  A white and blue print top looks great with white pants.  Just match the outfit with some nude sandals.
