How Starting a Fashion Blog Was the Best Thing I Ever Did for My Body Issues

When I was in junior high, I once sat in the cafeteria and looked across the room. A girl from the “popular” table was staring at me. Then suddenly the whole table looked at me at once and started laughing.
When you’re going through school, you inevitably meet bullies. But bullying changes as you get to higher grades. As it is common for bullying among boys to result in physical altercations, it's common for girls catty and malicious verbal abuse.

When you’re young, bullying is often about kids not sharing or making comments that they’re probably too young to understand. When you’re in higher grades, bullying more often than not involves physical appearance—your body every bit as much as the clothes you wear on it.
When I was a sophomore in high school, I decided to start my own blog, Don't Be Common Fashion.

The idea was to make a blog for people that were designated as "different" and criticized for it.
The worst part about it all was that even teachers seemed to favor the cookie-cutter kids that were from the “good” part of town and wore Lilly Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines.

Since I was a little kid, I’ve always been tiny. And even though I’ve remained the same size since I stopped growing, I still get comments that I'm too skinny or I'm getting too fat and I should stop eating potato chips.
I started my blog my blog because I was annoyed. I was annoyed with society and the people I interacted with throughout the day. Being called a twig isn’t exactly a compliment. I never thought it would turn into something, something that I continue work on for hours every day.

When I first started Don’t Be Common Fashion, I helped people with fashion advice, and I built the blog on the condition one condition: fashion without judgement. I wanted to create a safe place where people could share their love of fashion without worry of criticism.

I didn’t want them to have to worry about someone saying, “You can’t pull that off.” My goal was to help people feel confident, because when society's idea of beauty is constantly bringing you down, feeling confident can be hard to do.
What I never expected was that my blog would help me with my own body issues. Since I started school, I never felt good about the way I looked. I remember being teased on the playground about how my nose is weird because its pointed up.
After elementary school, the number of photos I was in became lower and lower until the point that I would refuse to be in photos at all.
Creating my blog gave me power to control taking photos, and it was then that I realized how great it was that my nose was pointed up and how my body naturally looked. Don’t Be Common Fashion helped me appreciate the fact that I didn’t look or dress like everyone else, and that I should be proud of that.
The biggest part of overcoming any body issue is having confidence in yourself, which is easier said than done. It took me almost 20 years to feel comfortable in my own skin, and what helped me most was realizing that everyone is different and you should embrace what makes you different.

7 Steps to Get the Perfect Airbrushed Look

I’m a little suck in ways about what makeup I use - to say the least.  I’m pretty sure I’ve been using the same foundation since I started wearing makeup when I was a sophomore in high school.  For a while I’ve always wanted to try airbrush makeup and was happily surprised at the turn out.  In this article I’m going to tell you how to get that perfect airbrushed look.

Step 1 - Dragon’s Blood Discovery Kit

The biggest part to making your skin look flawless is starting in the beginning.  This is a four part kit to getting your skin balanced and moisturized.  My favorite part of this kit was the sculpting gel and the moisturizer.

Step 2 - Instaglam Airbrush Primer

This product is great for keeping your skin looking great all day.  It’s colorless and light, but also moisturizes your skin.  Apply this to your skin after cleansing and before the application of any makeup.

Step 3 - Airbrush Concealer

This concealer is one of the best things ever when you have dark under eye circles, because when you're in college you pretty much never get enough sleep.  Instead of using a brush, use your fingertips, it helps you get a more even look.

Step 4 - Airbrush Makeup

thenotice.net
This makeup is possibly the thickest I've ever tried, which made me a little hesitant at first.  With higher quality brands it is really important to make sure you give the makeup time to set.  The best way to apply this is to add a small amount to the side of your hand then use the brush to blend.

Step 5 - Compact Deluxe Illuminating Powder

thenotice.net
I can not get over how much I love this powder.  It adds a great glow to your skin and doesn’t make it look cakey, which is my biggest fear when trying new makeup.  A great tip is to use under the brow line to lighten up your eyes.

Step 6 - Compact Deluxe Bronzing Powder

When applying bronzer, the most important thing to remember is to apply it to where sun would hit your skin naturally.  My biggest rule with bronzer is you can always add more, but taking it away is always a struggle.

Step 7 - Blush

This is the final step.  Blush is a little less intimidating than everyone thinks.  For this product you can either have a minimal effect or make it as dramatic as you want by building up.

10 Things Every Fashionista Needs

If you love fashion, you probably know the feeling that you never truly believe you’re living up to your full fashion potential; especially because clothes are expensive and paying your electric and grocery bill have to come first.  Here's a list of everything you really need to be a Fashionista.

1. Everyday Bag

Everyone should have an everyday bag, it's the one you hang by your door that can go with every outfit.  For an everyday bag, I would suggest going with a classic design or a neutral color.  If you can get both of those in one bag, you’ll  have the perfect bag - one that everyone will be envious of.

 2. Travel Sewing Kit

I never realized the power of this one until I moved into my apartment. I was unpacking and decided to wear a dress I've only worn maybe once, and the button was completely gone.  A travel kit is small and is perfect when you have little things in your wardrobe that you need to fix - like a missing button.   It's perfect to leave in a drawer in your house, or in that everyday bag just in case something pops out when you're out and about.

3. Black Blazer

When you’re applying for your sweet job after school or already working at your posh job that everyone stalks your social media about, (because it's so cool you just can't resist that time you got to meet Cara Delevingne) you will need a blazer.  My advice with this one is don't go cheap to save a little money, get something that really fits you and you won't have to end up replacing.

4. An iron

Irons are honestly amazing, I bought this cute dress off SheIn and like most clothing you buy from online websites, it didn't come in without some weird shipping line, but was easily fixed with an iron (about three minutes before my party started).  If you don't own an iron you can also use a hair straightener to make your clothing look sharp.

5. The perfect closet

What I mean when I say this is not some gigantic closet you see on Pinterest and a reality show about the rich and famous.  What I mean is a closet that is organized and has pieces of clothing you actually wear and can put together. In my opinion, having a closet where things don't fall down because you have them stacked on top of each other or when you actually know where your jean shirt is, are way better than any accumulate closet that you need a computer to tell you where everything is.

6. Statement Necklace

I really dislike statement necklaces because honestly, I think everyone is doing them wrong. You don't need some chunky piece of  jewelry to make a statement.  I love wearing black, and black is a classic look, but it's always good to add something that is eye catching to your outfit.  Adding a simple necklace, but has a gorgeous intricate design that you can wear with multiple outfits, is way better than anything that will probably become tacky three days after you buy it.

7. Full length mirror

There isn't a full length mirror in my apartment, and my five dollar one I got from Target was broken when I was moving out of my dorm. You can say it's pretty much impossible to tell if my shoes go with my outfit, and lifting them up to my small mirror does not do the trick.  Full length mirrors are worth the investment, but you don't have to get a fancy one. Yes, I would love one that had a silver vintage frame and looked like something a fashionable princess would have, but as long as you can see your whole outfit, it's all you need.

8. Jeans you can wear to anything

It took me about 18 years to find these jeans, then American Eagle stopped making them when I went to get a second pair.  The "Perfect" jeans are ones that you can wear to the beach and also a moderately fancy party.  They end at the perfect spot, but you are still able to cuff them when you wear them with sneakers or sandals, but they can also be dressed up by heals, a cute top, and the right jewelry.

9. LBD

I can not stress how important it is to have at least one little black dress in your closet.  You can wear it anywhere, today I'm wearing a black shift dress - which is fancy - but I dressed it down with a flannel and low heeled ankle boots. But, this dress would also look great if I wore a sequined blazer and some heels. When buying a LBD, go for something that is a little more on the simple side; if you get something that has unique lines, it's hard to convert it to different styles.

10.  Trench Coat

This is one thing on my “Need List”, a trench coat is a classic and is also super warm for those cold winter days. With this, you need to get a deal on it because coats are always expensive; I mean look at how good all cold weather companies do.  Look out for the sales at the end of every season, the best thing is to go to the store - to make sure everything fits - then buy it online.  You can always find more coupons and promo codes online; also, when there's an end of season sale, they're usually looking to get rid of everything fast.

7 Products to Make Your Skin Clearer

What first attracted me to Formula 10.0.6 was their colorful package (you should never judge anything from it’s cover), but I was very glad I did.  What I loved most about their products was how different they all were.  We all have our favorite brands and when you think about it, they all have something in common like the texture or consistency.  I appreciated how each of the products I tried had a different purpose to helping my skin.

1. Keep Your Cool

What I loved about this was how easy it was to apply and wash off before going out.  Many products I’ve used to help reduce the look of acne never work.  This was a light clear mask that was great to use before putting on makeup.

2. Picture Perfect Day

awesomechemistry.blogspot.com
I have very oily skin and pretty much have never used a moisturizer until this one. I loved how lightweight this was and that it didn’t affect my skin too much.

3. Get Your Glow on

google.com
People say when you’re in a happy relationship you get this glow, well you can also get it from this face mask.  I loved using this mask before I would take any photo, because it made my face really light up.

4. Pores Be Pure

soyonsfutiles.com
I loved this mask, for a few reasons.  One was the smell of the mask, it was amazing.  Sometimes masks can be too much, or in some cases smell horrible, but this one was great.  The second part I loved was how it worked with my skin.  It wasn’t messy and helped improve my skin.

5. So Totally Clean

ulta.com
I used these before I went to bed.  Sleeping with makeup is absolutely horrible for your skin, and just cleansing your face with a wash doesn’t take makeup fully off.  These were an easy way to take off any makeup before putting a night cream on.

6.  Seriously Shine Free

noodoso.com
After I tried their Picture Perfect Moisturizer, I decided to try this one.  This one was oil free and acted as a perfect all day moisturizer to put on before my makeup.

7. P. M. Perfecter

This is a great way to help your skin stay looking perfect throughout the next day.  I used this one every other night to help with oiliness throughout the next day.

My Top 5 Tips to Survive Dating in Your 20s

As requested, I’ve decided on writing this because okay, maybe not every article online about dating is unrealistic, but I rarely ever read one that doesn't leave me a little bitter by the end. Also, according to my finds I actually have good insight on the subject (which I don’t understand at all for my dating history), but let’s just go with that.

1. Good guys don’t feel the need to announce they're good

If you're talking to a guy and he brings up the fact that he’s a “good guy”, it’s sadly not a good sign. They’re trying to build a level of trust that they will eventually take away. A guy who is actually good, doesn’t need to proclaim that he is a good person.

2. Disappear

Gif Courtesy of giphy.com
I claim that I never play games, which for the most part is true.  If you like a guy, but you’re unsure if he feels the same, don’t text, Snapchat, or even like an Instagram photo.  If he likes you, he will text you and if he doesn’t, well you just dodged a fuckboi.

 3. Don’t ever dumb yourself down

Gif courtesy of giphy.com
When you have a crush on someone (I feel like I just went back to middle school saying that), you tend to go a little (or a lot) out of the way to make yourself look more cute or adorable.  The thing is you don’t have to do that by making stupid mistakes or my least favorite: acting like a child.  The right guy, someone who is actually worth your time, will want to appreciate your intelligence.

4. Don’t force anything

Gif courtesy of askdianne.com
This is kind of a horrible situation - when you like someone and it seems as though you’d have a lot in common, but it is the constant struggle to keep up a conversation.  My friend just gave me great advice on this: when this happens let the romance go for a while and simply talk to them like they’re a friend.  Nerves are a very powerful thing and you could possibly have nothing in common with this person or you could just be too nervous to make a good conversation.

5. Don’t date someone you wouldn’t want your friends to date

This is actually a really good test to put a guy through.  You care about your friends more than anything because they’re always there when you fall, right?  You wouldn’t want any guy to be unfair to your friends, so why are you putting up with it? Curve him and move on.

The dating game is changing because of technology and society.  In some cases it’s good, you no longer have to rely on the mail for long distant relationships, but in other cases, it also makes it very easy to be shady.  Ever wonder what the original purpose of the Snapchat chat was?  In this new society of dating, we need to be cautious and protect ourselves, but also don’t let bad fuckboi experiences keep you from an actual good guy.

5 Reasons Why Temporary Tattoos Are the Best Accessory

This past weekend I held a bridal shower for my brother. One of my baby cousins needed some cheering up and so I offered to give her a temporary tattoo.  When I was a little kid, I loved these tattoos. What I thought would keep my cousin’s mind off her pain quickly came a fun activity for my friends and me.

1. Tattoos are addicting AF

A photo posted by tattly (@tattly) on
All my friends who got tattoos when they turned 18 now have at least one or two more.  Personally, I would love to get a tattoo; but like most people my age, I have no idea what my future job will be and it would be horrible to not get my dream job because of a tattoo.

2. They’re gorgeous and unique

Even though rose tattoos are extremely popular, my favorite are the flower tattoos because they’ve never reminded me of a tattoo I’ve seen a million times.

3. They last longer than you'd think

Most of the tattoos are five dollars for two tattoos, which does seem like a lot, but when you put it in a good spot it can last more than a week.  I put my blue flowered tattoo on my upper arm and it looked great until I accidentally put some lotion on it.

4. They make custom tats

I think this is a great idea if you’re having a large event like a birthday party or especially a wedding.  It’s a great way to add an activity for your guests and Tattly is happy to work to make your design your own.

5. The selection

Tattly has pretty much a tattoo for every different type of person. From fun children tattoos to a great gift for your great grandma, Tattly has a great set of artists that are constantly creating new tattoos,

5 Pieces from Milkweed Mill to Turn Your Apartment into a Cute Country Oasis

This summer I become a little too obsessed with the show Fixer Upper.  If you're a fan of that show, then you know they just released news that they are no longer filming the show. If you were hoping one day to have a cute little country home for yourself or even your apartment you're living in currently, don’t lose hope.
Milkweed Mill was founded in 2015 when the owner, Stacy, and her boyfriend bought their first house.  Their house wasn’t like anything seen on the show Fixer Upper, but it wasn’t their dream house. Together, they began doing projects together; they got so many compliments on their house they started to make things for an Etsy shop.
A photo posted by MILKWEED MILL (@milkweed.mill) on
All the items from their shop are homemade, and the best part is they are even willing to do custom work.  The owners Stacy and Nate are constantly coming up with new pieces to put in their shop.

Kitchen

1. Wood counter top

One thing I've always wanted in my house is a kitchen counter to eat on.  What I like about this is you're not sitting down low and it is less formal than sitting at a kitchen table.  The great thing about this piece is you are able to mount it on any wall you want i.e. you could place it against a window and have a great view every morning while you're eating breakfast.

2. Wood island

An island is a staple to any kitchen; my favorite part about an island is when you're preparing food - you're not cut off from the rest of the kitchen. For example, if you're chopping up veggies in a kitchen without an island, you're most likely staring at a wall.  A kitchen island is a great idea because you can still communicate with your guests while you’re chopping up veggies/cooking.

Living Room

3. Coffee table

I love this coffee table, mainly because of the size of it.  In my house, we have this gigantic coffee table that always has nothing on it; so, why do we even have it? In my opinion, a smaller square shaped coffee table makes your living room look more balanced.

  4. Hanging rope shelf

Instead of having the traditional side table in your living room, try this hanging shelf.  It is a great way to add more style to your living room.

Bedroom

5. Farmhouse door

It's impossible to have a cute country oasis without a farmhouse door.  My favorite part about these doors is that they slide open. It adds more of a vintage feel. Also, they never slam shut or blow open and take up extra space.
